how should i say it?
" i am connecting to the internet thru a USB cable " or
" i am connecting to the internet thru an USB cable " . the one
with an "an" is grammatically correct but sounds awkward.

say "a USB cable" because sometimes things that sound better are more gramatically correct.

When u makes the same sound as the y in you, or o makes the same sound as w in won, then a is used.

a union
a united front
a unicorn
a used napkin
a U.S. ship
a one-legged man

A USB I'd say. Because when you pronounce the letter U you say "you" with a consonant.

The one that uses "an" is gramatically correct but if you're using it in idle online chatter or vocally, "a" works fine.

in conversation, the 1st one, in a formal setting like a paper, 2nd one
