Paint and fire don't typically go together. Make sure that the paint you're using is meant to stand up to extremely high temperatures. Many woodstove and fireplace stores sell specialty paints.

Not if you plant to use the fireplace ever again. The paint at best will burn off, scorch or flake, at worst it may smoke and off-gas nasty fumes. I recommend contacting your local fireplace/woodstove dealer or looking online for a safe alternative.
