I am a 13 year old female. My mom thinks I might have a disorder or something because I will wipe off a section of my plate before putting new food there and I will wipe off my fork/knife/spoon before i eat something else with it. I am also a vegiatrian if that matters. I don't think there's anything wrong, but she does. She thinks it might be OCD or something, but really it's not big deal, right? Please answer!!! I need to prove to her that I am perfectly fine, and that my wiping off things before i eat other things and not letting food touch other food (well I'll eat like sandwichs but i dont like my pineapple to touch my corn etc.) is not a problem!!! Please answer! Thanks!

Vegetarianism has absolutely nothing to do with your condition- I can assure you of that- and if any doc tells you otherwise, he's a liar (I trust my local politician more than I trust my family doctor!).

We all have our weird little habits. When I was young I had really odd habits- I used to get grudges against certain foods. Up to about two years ago I would refuse to mix the food on my plate. This isn't because I have any bizarre disorder- I just only like the taste of one type of food in my mouth at any time i.e I don't like mixing mash potato with certain things on my plate!

You haven't mentioned why you wipe your plate. Did it start off as a one-time thing that started off some paranoid thoughts that have turned it into habit?

We all have these little rituals that make us feel safer. As long as you do not have any eating disorders or anything else related to health, your mum should feel okay with the situation. Do try to work out why you are doing these rituals. Do you think there's bacteria on the plate? Do you not like mixing foods?

Don't let it become a big deal. Tell yourself it's just a phase and make sure you reassure your mum that these things just turned into habits.

Maybe you need a little excitement in your life! If you've got time to worry about the pineapple touching the corn then girl, you're not living life enough ;-)

your absolutely right, there is nothing wrong w/ what your doing. i use to do the same thing. i hated when i had green beans for dinner cause the juice would get all over the plate and make everything taste like it so i would get the green beans and eat that, wipe the juice off, and THEN put more food on it. it mainly had to do with foods touching other foods if one of them had a kind of juice with it that would mix into other foods. and i would do the same thing with wiping the fork or knife off before i used it on the other food too for the same reasons.

and i dont think there is anything in the world wrong with being a vegetarian. that has nothing to do with a mental disorder or disease or anything. its a choice either because you think its cruel to eat other animals like that or if you just dont like the taste of meat.

tell your mom your perfectly fine and dont have OCD or anything else

I prefer not to have sweet stuff mixing with the rest of my meal on my plate either, though I don't go so far as to wipe my fork off. But really, if it's not interfering with your life then it's not a problem.

yes , it sounds as if you have OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) this is diagnosed when an individual does the same thing every time all the time, its not a problem unless it interferes with you conducting your life in a normal way which it doesnt sound like it does, however if you want it to stop you could asked to be proscribed paxil for the OCD, it also treats depresion and anxiety. good luck

Don't worry... I know quite a few people who are like you. They don't like certain foods to touch on their plates. This is normal, although some people consider it a very mild form of OCD.

Don't worry, most people exhibit some form of OCD. It's just a little quirk you have.

No there is nothing wrong with it tell your mom she is the one with the problem. Tell her you do not want to endanger yourself with risk of salmonella and who likes their food to mix?
