If they are a friendly acquaintance, right.

A relative, left.

Someone you're dating, right,

Someone you have been dating a long time or married to, left.

If you're in the Southern hemisphere these are all reversed.

Almost all of the people that I hug go to the left (so that our right cheeks are close to each other). I have purposely gone to the right with one friend after discussing it. She learned that hugging technique in a special class. I thought it was nice, but I think the left works out better.

I've read somewhere that you should lean right, this way when you share your hug, the positive energy from your two hearts is shared. It's a whole chi-flow thing. But I do feel more comfy leaning left. That's supposed to drain energy between the two people though. Guess I'd better get more hugs to make up for all that negative energy!!

There's no etiquette for this that I've ever heard of.

I think most people go to the left (with your right cheek facing their right cheek) so that the right arm is doing the most of the hugging. This just seems to be the automatic thing, since most people are right-handed. Entirely arbitrary, of course, and dependent on what people might be carrying, how they are facing each other, etc.

All my friends are as awkward as I am. All we end up doing is head butting each other.
