for example...

lets say i want to go on a trip jan 1 - 15...can i stay the whole two weeks or do i have to catch the plane on a date that the airline specifies?

basically does the airline tell you how long you can vacation when you buy a roundtrip ticket?

(ive never ridden on an airplane or bought plane tickets before)

You would chose the times and dates of your flights at the time of booking. Some times and even days may provide a lower fare, so if thats something important to you, you might consider choosing a flight a day earlier, or flying in the morning rather than the afternoon, depending on the available fares.

Now, if you book Jan 1 to Jan 15 and you decide you want to return Jan 14 instead, or if you want to return at 3PM rather than at 9AM, you can change your flights, but depending on what type of fare you have, you may have to pay a change fee and any difference in fare. The lowest fares are non-refundable, but they can be changed. If you have a fully refundable fare you can change with no change fee, but it is possible that the return fare might be higher.

I hope this is clear. Its tough to explain air fares!

You choose when you fly at the time you buy the tickets. You can change when you are flying after you buy the tickets, but you will have to pay additional fees, so try to avoid that.

You buy tickets for a specific flight. You must get on that flight. Sometimes you can go standby on an earlier flight (on the same day) for free if there is room.

when you book a ticket for jan 1-15 you pick the time and date you go and return.

They don't pick your time...

They may have only scheduled departures from certain airports at specific times, but you select which time you want to travel according to their flight schedule.

You pick both flights, day and time, when buying your ticket.
