I've had dog's all my life and my parents gave our 2 dogs a mars bar or a bar of chocolate every day and they was fine it never made them sick and they was in perfect health.

When i left home i got my own dog and i gave him chocolate most days till he got cancer and i had 2 have him put 2 sleep.
(in fact when he got the cancer the vet gave him 6 months and he lived over 2 more years. The vet said its amazing he's going on so long it's because he's in such good health and well looked after)

I now i have 2 more dogs and they have chocolate regularly too so myself i cant see what harm it does to them.
My friends and family all give their dogs chocolate too.

My dogs have always weighed between 20-25 kilo's i don't know if that makes any difference but i ain't changing my ways.
My dogs are happy, well fed, loved loads, and are my whole life

And i don't care how many thumbs down i get!

What makes chocolate toxic to dogs and why is it that some dogs ingest it and don’t get sick? Here are some facts to clear up some of the confusion surrounding chocolate toxicity in dogs.

Chocolate can indeed be toxic to dogs. In fact, it is one of the 20 most reported poisonings. The ingredient in chocolate that causes the toxicity is theobromine. The minimum toxic level of theobromine is 100-200mg/kg with 250-500mg/kg being the level at which half of the dogs would die as a result of consuming chocolate. So what does that mean as far as how much chocolate is toxic? The level of theobromine varies depending on the type of chocolate. The levels of theobromine are listed below:

Milk chocolate
60 mg/oz

Baking chocolate
450 mg/oz

Semi-sweet chocolate
260 mg/oz

Hot chocolate
12 mg/oz

White chocolate
1 mg/oz

Given these levels, 4 oz of milk chocolate contains about 240mg of theobromine. Considering that the average chocolate bar contains 2-3 oz of milk chocolate, it would take 2-3 candy bars to produce toxicity in a 10 lb dog. However, a single ounce of baking chocolate could produce severe toxicity in the same size dog.

So, how does chocolate make dogs sick? Theobromine causes the release of certain substances, norepinephrine and epinephrine, that cause an increase in the dog’s heart rate and can cause arrhythmias. Other signs seen with chocolate toxicity can include increased urination, vomiting, diarrhea or hyperactivity within the first few hours. This can lead to hyperthermia, muscle tremors, seizures, coma and even death.

What should be done if a dog does ingest a toxic amount of chocolate? If it has been less than 2 hours, the dog should be made to vomit. Unfortunately, chocolate tends to form a ball in the stomach and may be difficult to remove. Supportive care should be provided for any other signs the dog is exhibiting.

Though it may not be harmful to the dog in small quantities, it is safer to avoid giving chocolate to dogs in general. As with everything else, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Chocolate is a cardiotoxin in dogs, which means it poisons the dog's heart. However, it takes a lot to get a fatal dose, and baker's chocolate is the most dangerous. My dog once ate a half pound of mini chocolate candies. He vomited and had diarrhea, but the vet didn't want to treat him and he survived. It's probably best not to take a chance, though, with your best friend.

The reason why people say to not feed your dogs chocolate is because the caffine in the chocolate can speed up your dogs heart rate and kill them. However, depending on the build up and the different ways different dogs bodies work can be the reason why some dogs can and some wont die from eating chocolate.

I'm not an expert, but here's what I know about this topic. Chocolate contains theobromine, which can cause seizurs in dogs. Your dog might not have been affected because of different reasons:

1) Different types of chocolate are more lethal than others.
2) Your dog may not have eaten enough of it. For example, a 90lb rottweiler eating a lb of of chocolate probably won't be affected.
3) Your dog is probably healthy and young.

You could easily search this online, and you'll find tons of information.

That's great. But chocolate can cause seizures in dogs. It can also kill dogs. It doesn't mean that it will happen, jut that it can. It is foolish to put this to the test because there is scientific data to back this up. The same thing applies to humans. There are certain things that can kill humans. Like drugs or drinking and driving. It doesn't mean that it will kill us, just that it can. I'd rather not test that theory either.

It's b/c it can block up their system. Different dogs react differently to chocolate, some can eat it and be fine when others will only a have a little and it could kill them. Either way chocolate isn't a good thing for them so keep it away from them as much as possible!

BECAUSE it is deadly. The darker the chocolate the worse it is. My friends Yorkie ate a package of dark chocolate and died the next day. My pug ate baking chocolate and had to have his stomach pumped. Your dog was lucky, some have a higher tolerance but that doesn't mean the next time he'll be fine.

Because theobromine will and can kill dogs.
Just beacuse yours got lucky all dogs do not.
Milk chocolate has less of the chemical in it baking or dark chocolate is far more dangerous.
I have a dog who ate about a pound of dark chocolate hersheys kisses purple foil and all. He did not die he never even got sick he did poop purple foil for a few days. But I consider myself lucky.

OMG Call the vet!!! I thought the same thing about my dog, a little poodle, fed her the same amount, and she was fine. A few weeks later, she started having seizures. I took her to the vet and they said it was too late to cure her. If I were you I'd make an appointment now, while you can. Good Luck, I hope your pooch is okay!! :-)
