Well, in cases where there is a measure of certainty-- after all, you seem to be sure that the feeling is mutual-- the best thing to do is go for it. Yes, it's scary. Yes, it means you may have to leave your comfort zone. But if you like him back, it's worth taking initiative.
If that still doesn't appeal to you... perhaps if you wrote him a note? That allows you to get your feelings heard without the face-to-face dialogue that you seem to not want. You don't even need to give it to him yourself. Get a trustworthy friend to pass it along for you. Or that same friend could simply tell him of your feelings.
