Other than keeping the chicken in the house all the time, she is somewhat of a pet, how can I stop this bird of prey from attacking again? I think it's a hawk, but I'm not sure. My other chickens just run and hide under something.

PS my dog did nothing to stop the attack.

Okay, good answers so far, but I know it's a bird of prey, my thoughts are though that it came onto my porch which is covered and the chicken was sitting on the dogs bed at the time, she wasn't out in the open. Will this hawk or whatever attack my special needs child when he's outside?

You are going to have to keep the chicken in the house of in a chicken coop that the hawk cannot get into. It will keep coming back if you offer it an easy meal. It is just doing what comes naturally, not much you can do about it. Don't try and harm it in any way...they are protected by law. Just don't supply it with food and it will go away to find food elsewhere. No, it would be HIGHLY unusual for a hawk to attack a person, no worries there.

Normally hawks prefer rodents, but obviously in this case, your chicken must be any easy meal. Maybe it can't find a good supply of mice or rabbits, but whatever you do, do not try anything against the hawk. It is just doing what it's supposed to, and plus they are protected by law. Your best bet is to keep the chicken in a coup when you aren't around (hawks won't normally attack when there are humans present, unless they are desperate in need of food.) And unless the hawk is down on the ground long enough for your child to provoke it, (not saying that he would) it will not just randomly attack him.

HA HA! My first laugh of the day, Thanks. Hmmm, I guess I would be a chicken because I know that I certainly am not a bird of prey. I am a bird who cannot fly, yet. Right now I am trying to learn how to fly like I used to. All while trying not to get my head chopped off and thrown into a skillet.

It was a hawk that attacked your chicken. the best thing to do is put your chickens in a confined area that is big but has a roof. there really is nothing you can do to stop a hawk.

You have already answered your own question..it's a bird of PREY,
A raptor, they eat other animals!
The only thing I can suggest is, keep the chicken in a coop or in the house!

Your chicken probaly wasnt scared or shatter shocked and couldnt move or didnt see so your best idea is to probaly train dog to protect chicken or keep chicken inside and teach child to play with chicken.
