"God" has been in English and its ancestor languages for at least 2500 years. The Proto-Germanic word was *guð which evolved into English god. The Proto-Germanic word probably comes from the past participle form of a Proto-Indo-European verb *ghu- 'to invoke a god', in other words 'invoked (one)'.
