Touching it quickly will not harm you. However if you pick it up with your bare hand, the continuous pressure of the dry ice against your skin will quickly cause frostbite, and can even freeze your skin at the point of contact. You can handle a small piece by continuously dumping it back and forth from one hand to the other. But gloves are still safer. And a large piece should not be handled without protective gloves, again because the greater pressure exerted against your skin by a heavier piece will freeze your skin faster.

I don't think anything bad will happen right away, but if you leave your hand on the ice long enough it will stick to your hand and be painful and difficult to remove--dry ice is much, much colder than frozen water. Better wet your hands first.
