The Painter has this right on the ball for the cost of living and such...

However, a few things run through my mind... Where were your intentions? Would you be alright with using the homeless guy for a days labour, then dumping him back on the street? There's being compassionate, then there's being arrogant...

Ever studied what happens to criminals that spend a good portion of life in the system? There's a reason there's a lot of repeats. The prison cell becomes a semi-safe place, with food, and what goes on in there to some is better than trying to make it out here. Even the criminal would seem to have it better than the homeless individual in this case. Oddly also why some commit crimes, the jail cell on a cold winter day is warm... Ever watched Shawshank Redemption?

Do you know his name? His circumstances? There are also 'percieved' homeless individuals that make a good dollar... For instance... You figure every busy downtown Toronto corner in the Core has a homeless guy on it. If perpepetually that individual is given money by 0.01% of the possible 1000 people walking by that location over 9 hours, 10 people gave money to the individual in an hour. Let's say it was some pocket change, but not more than $0.60, that individual just made $54. These rates are being very modest.

If we say the individual was being given a looney or a twoney, by 10 people, so an average of $1.50, now he's making $15 an hour... or $135 a day. What were you paying? I know that's way more money than I make...

Offering babysitting (or nannying) can be a great way to make money. Babysitting is a term most people understand. However becoming a nanny differs from Babysitting in several ways: Nannies are more typically full time (although they can work part time, Nannies do some light housework occasionally, Nannies often participate in helping to RAISE the child, not just babysit the child, and nannies usually DRIVE to the persons home and watch the child in their own home, Nannies also have more experience and are paid higher wages). I think you can list yourself as a nanny at some websites online but the best place to check for nanny positions are in the paper or on Craigslist. Another job you can do from home would be to sell a craft. I have a website online where I show people how to make rag rugs out of fabric. These are just some inexpensive instructional manuals and DVD's. You can make them for your personal use or you can turn around and make a large profit on them at craft fairs or on consignment at a local small retailer. If you like crocheting, this is something I would highly recommend. Otherwise any craft can be offered on consignment. You could teach classes in the summer at your local community college (although this isn't always ongoing). If you know a special skill or trade, you could teach an adult continuing ed class. I do not believe you need a degree to teach a continuing ed class although I'm not sure. For that matter, you could teach people how to crochet rag rugs! :) The most important thing is to find a niche, a need in your community and fill that need. If there is a legitimate need for it (a service or product a lot of people want), you will be able to fulfill that need and make a profit. Nanny jobs, for instance, are more likely to be found in affluent neighborhoods and college towns...a more rural city many not offer many. Craft fairs may be more common in smaller towns...etc etc.

Homelessness is not specific to laziness although laziness can be a reason for homelessness. Put yourself in their shoes and think for a minute what other reasons there might be for homelessness besides laziness. For example : The costs for goods and services is rising along with the standards of living. People are consuming more products at a larger amount for a costlier price tag. Homelessness is not the effect of just laziness. There are many social reasons for such a problem. Everybody looking to understand more about homelessness should take a sociology class.

Some people cant work and trully want to,I used to judge people like you are doing but now my handicap Is holding me from getting and keeping a job,I should have been out of work years ago but I believe In work, but I can not even do work for free like at a soup kitchen.

I understand that there are a lot of people that dont want to work or some people hustle on the side of the road and earn about 10,000 dollars a year here In the states hustleing.

oil boom that is what you have in alberta and of course any boom brings lots of job opportunities. good for alberta and it should be good for canada. re. the homeless is a long and difficult subject to answer in the same paragraph as an "economic boom" -- home less could be laziness, but often it is misfortune -- you have to look at it from every angle. also there are homeless people not by choice but "psychiatric" problems and the list goes on. enjoy your economic boom, hope it lasts and spread the give word that there are jobs for the taker. good 4 you.

Yeah. There used to be a woman wearing designer clothes and leaning on a lincoln in Texarkana, Arkansas with a sign saying, help, need money for diapers! Right. I hate those people, and I really hate the idiots who tell me I should be 'kinder' and 'more generous' to the less fortunate. Most of the less fortunate are just lazy.

i live in AB also, and i thank god i dont live in the city like Calgary. jobs are great there and they pay really good but you forgot to mention that no one can afford the rent!!! i have family there, shes a single mom her rent went up about 700$ a month this is very unrealistic. many people are homeless with good jobs!! there is one hotel there that has given a room to new employes who have no place to live. i know for a fact a one bedroom apartment there can go for 1,200 and up a month. think about that when you think about the homless.
