I don't think the government should tell women what they can or can not do with their bodies but when you see some of the idiots out there having kids shouldn't we do something to make sure the parents at least know the basics?

Freedom wise, the thought of that scares the crap outta me. What's next? Enforced sterilization and birth control? And we have driver's licenses... enough said about the accountability of some drivers.

HOWEVER... I'm a teacher... and yes, there are many days that I'd say HELL YES! to that question. People should not have kids if they are going to treat them badly. Children are a gift that needs to be cherished and loved. And fed. And educated. And not beaten. And...

The hospitals in my area require you to complete the baby care classes before you are allowed to give birth there. Obviously if you walk into the ER in labor and fully dilated they'll deliver your baby but if you're planning to deliver there and all they make you take the classes. If you can't pay for them there's a fund that helps people out with the price and they're really quite affordable. However I'm completely against any more government involvement in anything. And the other thing that should concern you is that if we're regulating intelligence what's the next trait we'll regulate. There are tons of diseases and conditions that are linked to genetics and many of them are very very common *diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease etc*. If we started sterilizing the people with those diseases in their family as well then how many of us would really have been able to have our children. And there is no reason on this earth that could convince me that a mandatory or forced abortion is the right thing to do to anyone. People who have voluntary abortions for various reasons suffer horribly over the decision but the pain that would come from having the government force you to abort a child that you wanted...I can't even imagine it.

I don't think so. The government already gets involved in everything. And I might have some different parenting ideas than the government Department of Whether or Not You Get to Have a Kid so maybe they'd tell me no because of things that aren't wrong, just different.

I think maybe we should give parents better parenting classes at least, like, a mandatory thing to have kids, or at least required before you give birth, but most people probably would ignore those things anyway. My half sister treats her kids so awfully and is such a poor parent, I can't stand to be around her poor kids.

I always heard that, we have to have a license to own a dog (or at least, we're supposed to get 'em licenses), but we don't need one to have kids. Crazy, huh? You'd think we'd need one for the kids more than the dogs!

I agree with you about too many idiots having kids when they don't have a clue how to raise them, but I don't know how licensing could be enforced. Maybe the other answerer has a point about life skills classes and education hopefully before people are getting pregnant.

there would be no way to enforce that BUT it may be possible to give a tax incentive or something for classes taken and passed about parenting and such. some people won't pass up good money... but many poor parents also don't pay taxes... so maybe NO change. OR if people who receive government assistance should have to go to parenting classes when they have children in order to get their extra per child money.

Honestly, I would pay taxes for a government program that educated and tested people from 13-25 on sex and babies, before they were legally allowed to copulate.

Iam so sick of all these stupid kids making babies and asking questions like "If I just had my period, and had unprotected sex, could I possibly be pregnant?!?!?!"

It would certainly be better than this crap assed excuse for a public education we're feeding them.

Well, it takes all kinds of people to make the world go round and round. While I've witnessed my share of blooming idiots, I don't think it would be fair to impose regulations as this often causes people to violate such ordinances. You've heard the saying, draw a line and I'll cross it, well, there ya go. Make a rule and somebody's gonna break it. I'll stop now. :-)

Yes, I will agree with you on this one. ANYONE can be a parent and that is very scary. They should have to take a psych evaluation as well as a test to make sure they know how to take care of a child. Don't ruin the gene pool!! LOL
