Hey - thanks everyone. I'm going to go to bed soon - without having cracked and had a smoke. Tomorrow will be day 4 and after that I'm hoping it will get easier. Feeling pretty good about myself now - I'm being more determined that I thought I would :)

Every time you are feeling weak think of someone you really love being torcherd and it will only stop when you become strong again.
You know that each cigarette shortens your life and people who love you would feel torcherd if anything happened to you through smoking.
Turn your cravens into hate, like a hate against a monster who is going to hurt you and your loved ones.
Yeah that sounds about right.
Oh well good luck

Online support group Quitnet.com. Saved my quit many times. It's free. They're not selling anything..

If you choose to use them, there's nicotine gum, patches, lozenges.

Drink lots of water. Eat healthy snacks, like celery, carrot sticks, etc. I got a packaged veggie dip mix powder, and used my blender to stir in low fat cottage cheese instead of the sour cream the label says. Yummmmm!

Sunflower seeds are great, too. The kind that is still in the shell. It takes a long time to eat a satisfying amount, and they won't put any weight on you.

Get some gum or a sucker. I'm fresh off cigarettes as well (one week) and I've found that when you have the urge to smoke, the best thing you can do is occupy your mouth.

I recently fell off the wagon after 18 months, the cravings never really go away, its all down to how you deal with them.

Quick fact for you though, the chemical addiction only lasts for 4 days - after that its all in the mind.

You have to want to quit, and slap yourself on the back for the 3 days - it aint easy.

Try this - lets say you were on 20 a day, with a packet being around the £5 mark (and above) get a big glass jar and stick a fiver in it every day, youll be stagered at how quick it mounts up, in a year thats just over £1800 - think of all the shoes you could buy with that ;)

Stick at it - and good luck!

edit: one other thing, dont think of it as giving up smoking, that way your mindset is that you're punishing yourself and giving up something good, think of it as not killing yourself anymore - you might find it easier to not light up that way!

It will get easier if you hang in there. A suggestion from my doctor was to drink orange juice or have a peppermint when you start to feel a need to smoke. It has to do with the way nicotine works on our blood sugar. I quit smoking 25 years ago and there are times when I remember how good it made me feel. Then I think of how it made me stink, how much it cost, the health problems it caused and how much second-hand smoke my kids got and I congratulate myself and have a mint.

Do something else you like - eat a chocolate? My dad used to eat some kind of butter toffee instead of smoking - he stopped cold turkey at 40, had smoked since he was 15.

I really applaud your stopping, it is much harder for some people than others. Have you got any friends/family who can support you/distract you when you feel you need it?

Chew Gum! I quit smoking in April, i just had to stop myself being bored really cause i liked to sit and smoke in the conservatory watching tv! I still get cravings now though they only last about two mins! Just distract yourself from the thought!

The third and fourth day is supposed to be the worst. try sipping water or chewing some gum, eating snacks....healthy ones such as carrots or whatever healthy u fancy.
Have u ever tried the nicotin patches, i found they really helped.
Keep fighting the urge, you will get there eventually, it is hard but not impossible. Good luck to you.
