Last week one morning I was on the bus to work and some little so and so had their mobile speaker on and was playing their music loud. No one said a thing. Finally I turned round and told her to turn it off.She did. Now I am a 38 year old Essex boy from a solid working class background in my day only crazy people played stereos on the bus and no one would have let you get away with it. Are we all aspiring so much to gentel middleclassdom we have forgotten how to tell people to behave. This female was'nt even a child as my mum would have said she was a 'big woman' old enough to know better.

Yes, JAM123. Good manners and respect for others is hardly something to be associated with social class. A person need not have money or prestige to be a gentleman or lady.
Problem is few teach these things to people growing up. I am not all that old, but my parents were old fashioned when it came to manners and respect, and my grandparents influenced also. Some things one did not do.
I remember, from a very young age being taught how to properly hold a fork or spoon, and to act the gentleman. I am glad they taught me these things.

I don't think this has anything to do with middle-class.

I think this is more to do with people's ability to deal with anti-social behaviour (or inability).

Times have certainly changed. You know full well there's a chance that these people are sometimes equipped with all manner of weapons.

Even if they're not, people know full well that these people don't have the courtesy to think about people in the first place and know the reaction will be one of F off or similar if confronted.

But what can you do. You can't clip the bleeders round the ear -- assault. Plus no doubt you'll have the so-called parents around kneecapping you also in the process!

Plus with a feeling of the law being on the side of the criminal and not the victims nowadays - it's no wonder people are keeping their heads down!

Interesting question though!

Hold on now! Are you suggesting that what you call the 'middle class' are wimps? I'll protest when I think it's necessary. It's more a question of how, and that might be a question of class. I would not, for example say to someone 'Shut that f***ing music off.' I might, however have said, 'Excuse me, but could you turn the music down a bit?'.
Being what you call 'genteel' has nothing to do with class. And, if I **** my little finger when drinking tea from a china cup (which I don't) it has more to do with 'aspiring' to be middle class.
Just to let you know, I have never considered myself to be 'middle class', my genealogy and upbringing veer towards minor aristocracy.

This is to do with respect not class...you can have respect for someone who is in a low class and have none at all for those in an upper class. Where does it start - where does it stop?

Answer me that one...I am a secondary school teacher and I get respect from my classes because of my ability and knowledge - even though I have been in some schools where I am definitely a lower class than my pupils. Respect begets good behaviour and you can have high class Yobs just as easily as low class ones.

If you took a poll, most people couldn't describe "class" to you any better than they could describe the man-in-the-moon!
