There is no sense in praying for dead people because whatever state they were in when they died is how they will stay. Either right with God through acceptance of Jesus' death for their forgiveness or they are eternally lost without Christ. But sometimes you cannot judge if someone was saved because God can do anything. Even in the last minute of their life and can save people.

If I prayed for someone who died it would be that they know Jesus and now are standing beside Him in heaven. Other than that there is not much prayer for them only their relatives that are left here on Earth for comfort.

Sorry praying for the dead just doesn't seem to do any good!

A passage in the New Testament which refers to a prayer for the dead is 2 Timothy 1:16-18, which reads as follows:

16 May the Lord show mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, because he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chains. 17 On the contrary, when he was in Rome, he searched hard for me until he found me. 18 May the Lord grant that he will find mercy from the Lord on that day! You know very well in how many ways he helped me in Ephesus.

I believe that death frees us from the bonds of space and time. So time no longer has meaning to the deceased. Time also doesn't have meaning to God, so for all I know, God has already "dealt" with someone who recently died.

When I pray for the dead, I pray that their souls may be accepted into God's loving presence. I then pray for those who the deceased left behind, that they may be comforted in their sorrow.

Because God hears the prayers of the righteous.

Because membership in the church is eternal, and not bound by the limits of this life.

Because God is merciful, and he desires that all be saved.

Because God can choose to save whomsoever he wishes to save, for whatever reason, and my devout prayers may constitute that reason.

Because not everyone is judged immediately to heaven or hell, and might benefit from prayers and petitions on their behalf.

So that they may find peace in the afterlife and finally be united with the creator and experience absolute bliss for all eternity.

Because people are selfish..... They pray for THEMSELVES, not the departed....

If Christians really beleived in Heaven, you'd think they would REJOICE at the death of a member. instead they weep...why? Afraid of the process of death, or perhaps they know inside they beleive in lies?

One last chance to beg the pink monkey for favors in the eternal cage!

Perhaps it's to get them a bigger banana!

I think mainly because it creates comfort in people, and that's what they are needing most in times of like those.

Because it is very probable that they need purification after death before they can enter heaven.

You have to be utterly pure to enter heaven.

Our prayers can help them on their journey of purification - to make it less painful and to help them complete it sooner.

Our prayers for the dead are much welcome alms that we give them.
