cartilaginous bump at base of finger- what could it be?

I have had a bump at the base of my index finger for 2 months now. It started very small, about 1mm (even at this stage others could feel it), and has grown to about 3x its original size now. It hurts if I press on it but not otherwise. It feels like cartilage or bone. Now it is on the verge of protruding. What could it be? Should I bother to get it checked out or am I just a hypochondriac?

if it is growing, and it sounds like it is, i would definitely get it checked out. it is probably nothing serious but best to find out sooner rather than later...
