He is an indoor cat and I guess he feels like he is out in nature when the Xmas tree goes up.

fill a spray bottle with water. when you see him near the tree, spray him with the water(make sure it's on stream, not mist) and tell him no in a firm voice (best have a man say no, since his voice is deeper and will seem more commanding than a higher pitched woman's voice!!) use white vinegar to treat the area. (yah it smells, but it gets rid of the worse smell. or there are sprays that smell like very strong laundry detergent...not sure exactly what it's called, but it comes in a white bottle with a blue wrapper and an orange cartoon cat on it. we use it for our cat) also, try filling a soda can with coins, and toss it near him when he goes by the tree. the sound will scare him. after enought punishment and negativity associated with the tre, he should keep his tail down!

Or maybe the tree has someones else's urination there and he's trying to mark his territory. My cat was awful that way long ago and we steamed the carpets and put this plastic that you can find on the packing aisle or ask a Lowes rep, which is a gigantic tape, that you use for painting walls to cover the floor. is clear so it shouldnt be a problem after carpet is dry (keep the cat in another room) tape the plastic there under the tree, all around and as far away as possible, you can put back your furniture on top of it but he wont smell his pee in it so he wont do it again. If you puncture the plastic cover up again with regular tape that should work just fine until the season is over and the tree away from him!

I don't know if this will help with your Christmas tree problem. But when I had trouble with one of my cats using the bed for a litter box, I started covering it with plastic. He went back to his box.

Perhaps you can find a plastic tarp such as painters use, or an old shower curtain, and use that.

Good luck!
