Wear her down. Just keep complaining. Hopefully she'll realize how silly it is to fight with you about something that she knows is the right thing to do. I try to tell stories around smokers that would probably piss them off. Ever noticed that smokers will smoke in their car while driving and have to have the window rolled down while it's raining? Ever noticed overweight nurses standing outside of a hospital smoking in the freezing cold? Ever notice how little work a smoker does each day at work because most of the day they are going out to smoke? Ever notice a smoker smoking in the car with an infant in the back seat? Ever taken a clean wet rag and wiped the inside windshield of a smoker's car or wiped the walls of a smoker's house? That yellow-brown stuff is in their lungs.
If she doesn't understand what she's doing after that, ask her what other thing she's not disciplined in and then challenge her to set a goal and accomplish it (in addition to quitting smoking).

Quitting smoking was the hardest thing I ever did. I quit 30 years ago and never started again because the thought of quitting was TERRIFYING. Even though people think they want to continue smoking, everyone knows that sooner or later they will have to quit and they are afraid of that.

Another thought is in order for you to stop the chain of smoking in your family, you don't start, so your own kids won't be writing to Yahoo! Answers in 15 years, asking this same questions.

Smoking cigarrettes? Why does she have such an urge to hide that? She must really be embarrased about it. Well, unfortunately, there is very little you can do to get her to stop. That has to come from her. The desire to quit has to outweight her desire to smoke, and once it does, the real battle to remain consistent begins. She can try the patch or the gum, and those are helpful. There is also CBT, which can help implement a plan of action for her to cease smoking, and what's more, to cease the triggers that lead up to lighting up, maybe even the thoughts. There may be someone in your area who is trained to lead smoking cessation groups or do CBT to help her stop. Another aspect is having your support - once she makes that decision, be there to help her: call her, text her, anything to offer your support and encouragement when the going gets tough. If she really wants it she can do it.

The 23rd off Nov. as been a year since i have had a smoke. My suggestion is not to keep on to her, be supportive, she as to realize that she need to quit for her own reasons. I found when I was smoking if anyone tell me about it I would smoke more. Hopefully she will realize that she needs to quit it's then she will need your support. Hope I have helped in some small way.

It is really hard to stop. I smoked for 35 yrs. My family and friends and associates tried everything to get me to stop. One even offered to pay me $1,000. But noooooooooo! Then one day after contemplating it for several days in a row, I stopped. I did buy a box of nicorett gum, chewed 4 pieces and quit. I haven't had a smoke in 8 yrs come Jan 1, 2007. It's something your mom has to decided for herself. She has to think it and believe it.

She will stop smoking when the time is right for her. Nagging from you won't have any effect. It could be worse, both my parents smoked a pack a day each while I was growing up.

there's always a chance that she will...
my uncle used to smoke one pack every day. no matter what anyone says, he doesn't listen. but not long ago, the doctor told him that if he doesn't stop, he will be in danger. So, in less than two months, he really stopped smoking!!
i guess what you could do is, maybe decrease the amount little by little(like one cigarette each time?)

honestly, I don't think that she will ever stop. It's a personal decision and it's really difficult to implement it into life. Besides, 1 pack every three days it's not that much. Don't worry, it's not because she doesn't listen to YOU, it's just extremely difficult!!! And many people just like it, even when they realize all the consequences... Relax.

smoking is very addictive i quit for three years and started back up three years ago. I smoke about a pack three days. just keep on to about and remind her that you love her and you want her around for a long time without worrying about the long term affects of smoking. Give her space though, ultimately it has to be her decision to quit

You can't make her stop smoking, she has to want to.
