There is some evidence from human studies that long-term marijuana use can have adverse effects, although it seems that the spectrum of these effects is narrower than previously thought and mainly centres around cognitive (intellectual) function.

A paper in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) vol. 287 No. 9, March 6, 2002, pp. 1123-1131) found that long-term cannabis users performed less well than shorter-term users and controls (people who didn’t use cannabis) in tests of memory and attention. The long-term users averaged 23.9 years of use, compared with 10.2 years in the shorter-term users.

One reason for the decreased IQ and memory in consistent heavy users could be the fact that long-term cannabis use has been found to decrease blood flow to the front areas of the brain

Pot smoking leads to . . . .. uhhh . . . . . I forget . . . . . That is the first mentally debilitating effect, short term memory loss. This is a reality. Another is motivation. Argue all you want - chronic dope smoking will make it harder and harder to get out of bed, or get up to turn off the TV. Many will work against this, but think on this: how much more would you get done if you DIDN'T smoke dope? There is significant lung damage as well, over time (POTENTIAL for emphysema, cancer, etc.) But there's a lot of BS too. any time you hear "studies indicate it MAY be linked to . . . " you are reading another stretch. Overall, it's the personality type that determines if you will experience debilitating effects or not. A "leader" may be able to smoke all their life and never skip a beat. Their centered devotion to life's progress may make smoking transparent. But a "follower" is in BIG TROUBLE when they smoke. These are the people that are easily bored and will do just about anything to fill the boredom. They are also the ones responsible for pot being blamed as a "gateway drug," because when they get bored with that, well, it's on to the next high.

Most of the answers you will get to this question will be painfully ignorant. Your own teacher may be painfully ignorant. You will note that nobody provides references for their statements that marijuana kills brain cells or any of the other nonsense.

First, you should know that there is some evidence that marijuana actually preserves brain cells in the absence of oxygen. That is why it is currently being researched as a treatment for strokes, among other things.

The largest study done to date of the health effects of marijuana was done by Kaiser Permanente. They surveyed 65,000 patients over a period of years. They found no significant differences in the health records of marijuana smokers versus non-smokers. If you are into reading medical literature, you can find the full text of the report at http://druglibrary.org/crl/aging/sidney-01.html

If you want more comprehensive reviews of the subject see the collection of the major government commission reports from around the world at http://druglibrary.org/schaffer/Library/studies/studies.htm In short, they all concluded that marijuana was not a major threat to health, for a variety of reasons.

If you want to know why marijuana is illegal, see the short history of the marijuana laws at http://druglibrary.org/schaffer/History/whiteb1.htm The story is funny and fascinating. You will find a lot of surprises. For example, the US Official Expert on marijuana testified in court, under oath, that marijuana will make your incisors grow six inches long and drip with blood. He also said that, when he tried marijuana, it turned him into a bat. Be sure to include these effects in your report.

Now, the tricky part is that your teacher may be just as much in the grip of Reefer Madness as some of the people here. I can just about guarantee you that your teacher has never read any of the information I have linked above.

Marijuana (or THC) puts a coating on individual brain cells. This film or coating slows down the brain. It takes the brain longer to "spark" a thought. Although the THC eventually "washes" off the brain cells but when someone needed to learn or know something specific and the person recently injested marijuana, that was an unfortunate missed opportunity. Besides the THC on brain cells (which are mostly fat cells), there's the harm to the lungs for smoking it. Just like cigarettes except worse. Cigarettes have filters, joints or bongs don't.

its hard to say for sure

in the 50s the gov lied about the real affects

many people smoke tons of it and still function somehow

if you pay close attention you would see with anyone who smoked too much of it over decades, they watch details too much and miss the whole picture, also being upset at nothing sometimes. To smoke it sometimes once in awhile as a teen is probably ok.

Well, you may forget how to use the word bye. Personally, I think smoking weed makes a very lazy person. It could also make you fat, because all you do all day is smoke and eat and probably sleep.

Deliberatley inhaling ANY type of smoke into the lungs damages them. I have COPD and am dying of it. I can't exercise or do anything at all. I smoked it about 30 years ago and wish I hadn't.

I heard that one of them is the same as smoking cigarettes. You could get lung cancer, emphysema. Also it kills your brain cells. You become slower.
Do people have anything better to do then criticize spelling
can they get by that and get to the question
