Nitrogen is used for several purposes. I believe you are refering to N2 with respect to combustion. Combustion is a chemical effect that is caused when molecules from the reactants(usually air) and fuel burn to release energy. The products(exhaust gas) is dependant on the type of fuel used. Octane(petrol) which is the fuel used in most cars burns to primarly form C02, H20, C0 or 02. What you'll notice is that Oxygen is present in each of the products and that is because oxygen reacts with carbon and hydrogen from the fuel. No chemical bonds can be fromed with nitrogen with regards to standard combustion. However Nitrogen is important in a combustion system as it behaves is a coolant since it does not combust. If a car engine burnt only oxygen in its combustion chanber, the pistons would probably expand too much and cease before you could get from A to B.

I think one of the things you might be asking is why isn't N2 found in our atmosphere? It is because the earth's gravity is insuffiecient to keep nitrogen on our planet. Any N2 that is released into the air eventually drifts out of the atmosphere into space.

Nitrogen gas is eminently usable in any service which requires an inert gas. The problem is that it is extremely difficult (compared to other gases) to isolate. You can do it cryogenically or some equally expensive way but why bother when there are other, cheaper options such as neon, argon, etc.?

Nitrogen gas is usable.

Any time you want to use a cheap plentiful dry inert gas .

Gas shock absorbers and Gas springs (used on car hoods and hatch backs) are nitrogen filled

are just a couple of examples

Nitrogen is widely used in the process industries to inert tanks, pressure vessels and venting systems to prevent explosive hydrocarbon/air mixtures forming and consequent safety hazards (particularly for start ups and shutdowns for maintenance)

It is also used in the manufacture of ammonia a very important process on which the manufacture of many fertilisers and other products depend.

N2 is used quite often in many compressed air situations where compressed N2 is used for storage of energy. Is there anything in particular you are thinking about in regards to it's use?

Because N2 gas is non combustable. It cannot burn in air .This is the main reason that it is not used in many purpose.

The next time you buy a bag of chips and notice the bag seems inflated. That is nitrogen gas. It keeps the chips fresher longer.
