Yes but the United States has power seperated between state government and the Federal Government. The FBI only enforces Federal crimes. Most of these crimes tend to be more serious offenses that require investigation (like finacial crimes and large drug dealers.) State law tends to govern more street crimes. The areas of law do overlap.

There is no one agency that polices the United States. There are far more agencies than you can imagine that each do their little police. The FBI generally handle interstate crimes. The DEA deals with drugs. Customs, Immigrations, Border Patrol, ATF, Dept of State, Dept of Defense, EPA, etc all have their investigative pervue.

There are also federal law enforcement officers hired in many places that take the role of what is generally referred to for police but only handle federal offenses on federal property. There are several such agencies like Park Police, Fish and Wildlife Officers, Game Wardens and Police Officers for the Dept of Defense, GSA, Mint Police, FBI, and Uniformed Secret Service.

The FBI just does Investigation. But if a Federal Crime is commited in front of that agent. That agent can go in and Apprehend the suspect

The other answers are close - but the Federal Bureau of Investigation officers ARE federal agents and work for the Dept of Justice. They are not federal agents in the sense of ATF (Alcohol, Tobacco and firearms) or Federal Marshals.

they aren't federal police in the way that we have state police. it is more of an investigative body. the fbi doesn't go around patrolling the streets is what i mean.

something that is closer to a federal police force would be the border patrol, atf, dea etc.
