We met several years ago briefly and became good friends through exchanging many hundreds of emails since. I am married; he's not although he's had two serious romances in that time. Recently he closed an email with "Ily, (and then his name)." I didn't respond to that, thinking he did it inadvertently. He hasn't done it since. What to think?

"Ily" is a shorthand, text message abbreviation for "I love you".

I assume you have told him you are married and he seems to have been quite open about his relationships with other people.

Unless he is including content in his posts that suggests he wants something more from you than an on line friendship, I wouldn't overthink the inclusion of the acronym.

I don't even know what that means but you should be careful if you are married and have a relationship with some one online. Maybe he wants more than you can offer.

i have no idea what "lly" means but i have to conclude it is a term of endearment --- i would not think it was done inadvertently -- perhaps to see what the reaction would be and as you have not responded he has backed off
