Yes, when my son was diagnosed they gave him a slew of books from the hospital. Contact the American Cancer Society and chapter for bone cancer...it will have the material she needs.

Truth be known I hated those books. They put more fear into you than anything. They are so broad and cover so many cancers that the side effects they talk about may never happen to you.

It's better that she has an understanding of the drugs she is taking and how they will work. Frankly, she will lose her hair, her red and white cells will drop, she may need transfusions, she will be susceptible to infection, she will be so sick to her stomach after chemo and if she has to have the intrathecal (spinal) injections, they are terrible and make sure she is consciously sedated.

You may think twice about what you want to expose her to. DON'T read stuff on the internet...that is the worst you can do. As I said get it from the Cancer Society or hospital.

Tell her to stay positive. They have camps for kids with cancer. Make sure she is enrolled. Talk to your social worker. They often have doctors there 24/7. She will need everyone's support to stay positive. Better not to focus on the bad stuff but to pull for beating this. Her will is her strongest allie in combating this disease.

Unless your niece is really at terms with her cancer, getting a book about it may not be the best thing to do. When my mother had breast cancer, she was given alot of books about it, but I don't think she has read any of them. I think it was too hurtful for her. If your niece is really interested in getting books about bone cancer, then you might want to check with the foundation for bone cancer (whatever that may be). Talk to her about it, and see what she thinks.

Just diagnosed with a bone cancer myself. I would agree with love over books. No matter what you read you will not be an oncologist ready to cure this thing by yourself. Listen to your treatment options and maybe get a second opinion on things. But stewing over an illness could lead to depression. St. Jude Childrens Hospital might also help her. God bless.

Be sure to give her a New Testament to read, besides anything else.

In the Beginning God created heavens and earth.
God gives you air to breathe and sunshine to enjoy.
God gives you water to drink and food to eat.
God gives you a wonderful body and sound mind, to live.
God loves you, and you are precious to Him.
Son of God died on the Cross to save us from condemnation.
Jesus’ love is boundless and everlasting.
We have the hope of Heaven through Jesus.
Life therefore has fantastic and glorious future!
(Digestion of above can even prevent depression and suicidal thoughts.)
