a diploma is a certificate from high school. a degree is from college and you can get different types (ie bachelor's, master's, doctorate, etc)

Yes it is. Before I took my degree I had a Higher National Diploma, or HND. The standard joke was that HND stands for "Has No Degree".
An ordinary diploma is one down from that. If you have a HND it is the equivalent to about the second year of a university course. The OND is equivalent to A level.
PS an American diploma is roughly equivalent to a bicycle safety certificate, so ignore the yanks.

As stated previously, in the UK a Diploma of Higher Education is usually achieved after two years study, and a degree after 3 years.

However, you cannot hold both qualifications in the same subject, as both are 'exit' awards - the higher award overrrides the lower, so just because you've studied for three years it doesn't mean you hold both awards. You could, of course, study to DipHE level in another subject.

Also, a DipHE isn't 'classified' like a degree, it is a pass/fail award.

Some professional qualifications are also called diplomas, and though they may not involve as many hours of study as a DipHE or degree, they may be of more interest to an employer

A degree is worth three years of undergraduate study.

A diploma of HE is worth 2 years.

A certificate of HE is worth 1 year.
