Do you have cavities? Are your teeth hurting you? Are you aware of any work that needs to be done on your teeth? If you answer no to all of these questions(be honest, though), then cancel your appointment right now(leave a message), and relax! You can maybe check into sedated dentistry, and reschedule. I don't think you should make yourself suffer from anxiety anymore. Cancel, and do some research on sedated dentistry. Make that phone call now and chill out. Have a great evening.

If you ask, your dentist may allow you to use nitrous. Or, you may find that what they are doing isn't scary at all. Most likely, this is what will be happening: They will take some xrays (which don't hurt... they're just bulky and a pain to bite down on) and the doctor will examine your teeth using the xrays as well as a mirror and an explorer. He may or may not find work that needs to be done, but chances are very good that he will set up a second appointment for any restorations that are needed.
Then, a hygienist may clean your teeth. Again, you can ask for nitrous during this procedure if you're still feeling anxious. Unless you need what is called 'root planing,' which is a deeper cleaning, your cleaning should go pretty smoothly and be painless.
Good luck. Don't cancel. You'll need to go in sooner or later... and I'm sure you'd rather it be sooner when all you need is a cleaning and a filling or 2 rather than later when you need to have teeth pulled...

I think more people have a fear of dental work than they admit. I just read OldNCrabby response and wanted to jerk all their teeth out...so nasty. I agree with everyone that posted that you get a sedative. I had fear and finally had to do this. Odd, just went to dentist about 4 hours ago and the fact I have to pay for 4 crowns soon scared me a lot more than the procedure! Get the sedative hon and get teeth checked. Better than waiting and paying more money! Good luck!

I go every 6 months and it's always the same . I get nervous but I have to do the old axiom = " Face your fears and they will run from you ." I dont recommend a sedative . It's like 6 month physical . Just walk in and get it over with .

Let your dentist know about your fear. If he doesn't offer to give you some nitrous or a prescription for a sedative, find a new dentist who will help to ease your fears. Most yellow page ads for dentists state they will help ease fears.

tell your dentist to maybe give you a sedative to keep you calm. maybe he can suggest something else if you just tell him your fear. or you can have a friend go with you to hold your hand (sounds really corny, but i needed a friend to go with me for a lot of things, like piercing my ears or getting a root canal...) its normal to be afraid of the dentist or the doctor so dont worry, your not the only one! good luck!!!

I don't think it is so much fear of the checkup, but what he is going to say about the work you need.
Pay no attention to oldncrabb he can't even spell hypnotize correctly.
Calm down.

Imagine having no teeth. Or rotten teeth, That should help. Also let, the doc know- he has seen it before, so he'll talk through the exam to calm you down.

You might talk to the dentist about a sedative to make you less nervous.

They can sedate you for this. Call your dentist and ask about it.
