Thinking of looking into the Imitrex injector. I have such horrible migraines sometimes I end up with a visit to the ER. Any other suggestions.

Migraine prevention medicine Different types of medicines are used for migraine prevention. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved five drugs for migraine prevention: TOPAMAX ® (topiramate) Tablets Methysergide Propranolol Timolol and Divalproex sodium Whereas the above meds are still prescription some may be much much less expensive. Propranolol is really cheap, not sure about the others. These are designed to help prevent the migraines vs stopping once they are started. Exedrine Migraine helps some people. Your best bet would be to talk to your doc about some of the prevention treatments.

are you sure you have migraine? did you have a check with a neurologist? coz headaches can be classified as tension or cluster headaches as well and you do not want to have the wrong treatment for the wrong type of headache.

If you really do have migraine, it will really be better for you to take preventive medication like topiramate or propananol to prevent it from coming than to keep taking pain killers to stop them.

This is because, overusage of some pain killers will result in a rebound headache- you will have a worse headache than before and will be dependant on your painkillers.

Go consult a neurologist and discuss your options as well as check to see if your migraine is not some underlying problem. Meanwhile, you can take aspirin or ibuprofen to relieve your migraine attacks. (Remember no more than 3 times a week.)

What should I avoid while using Imitrex?

Do not use Imitrex within 24 hours before or after using another migraine headache medicine, including:
- sumatriptan injection, almotriptan (Axert), eletriptan (Relpax), frovatriptan (Frova), naratriptan (Amerge), rizatriptan (Maxalt, Maxalt-MLT), or zolmitriptan (Zomig); or
- ergot medicine such as dihydroergotamine (D.H.E. 45, Migranal), ergotamine (Ergomar, Cafergot, Migergot), dihydroergotamine (D.H.E. 45, Migranal), or methylergonovine (Methergine).
Sumatriptan may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be alert.

I have had both the pills and the injection. The pills work best at ther very onset of a headache. I found once the headache was set, the pills did nothing. The injection works fantastic, no after effects. But it has to be done at the hospital.

It didn't work for me...I have to agree with CAT. Migranal or Midrin is my choice.
