A comforter is filled with down or polyester sewn between two layers of fabric. A duvet cover is like an envelope or large pillowcase. You put the comforter inside it to protect it and keep it clean. The duvet cover can be easily removed for cleaning or laundering. They are particularly good for down comforters.

A duvet cover is a cover FOR your comforter. Kind of like two sheets sewed together with little ties or velcro to keep it on. This way you can match your decor with out buying a whole new comforter, and wash it . This saves from washing your comforter all the time. Great thing, a duvet cover.

I'm not a designer, but a duvet cover is like a big pillow case or envelope that you put a duvet into. It is usually closed along the bottom with a zipper, Velcro, or buttons.

Duvets are usually made of eider down... goose feathers. A duvet cover protects the duvet and is much easier to launder than the duvet itself.

A duvet is usually down-filled with a removable cover. A comforter can be filled with down or synthetic, and usually doesn't have a removable cover.

a duvet cover is just like a pillow sham. You actually stuff a comforter into it. There is no difference except you can change the cover to suit all your decorating needs.
