I heard this somewhere, It is packed in a 6 pack so that it is easier for the house wife to carry home from the market. Of course this was way back in the day. And I think it was Schlitz that made the first 6 pack or maybe Pabst.

Because it has to be an even number, otherwise it would be difficult to handle. In Britain we only have 4 packs, but the tins are usually 440 or 500 ml (i.e. best part of a pint). Imagine a five or seven pack - it would be a silly shape!

6 Packs in US vs 4 Packs in UK because US beer is weaker and you need more of it.
Number is probably simply down to ease of packaging and weight. You can carry it easily in one hand.

If manufacturers were truly decimalised, we would buy 5-packs and 10-packs. However, by insisting that customers all want to buy half-a-dozen and a dozen of everything, they get to sell more product. By selling 6 cans, they sell 20% more product than 5-packs.
