Probably because you can appreciate things from before your time: music, movies, fashion, stories. It just means that can talk to and understand older folk, you don't think like the typical 16 year old. I am an old soul myself, this generation scares me.

All Christians have Old souls, there is a Bible verse that say your old men shall dream dreams and your young me shall see visions. I have had a gift of dreams from a very early age. So by that account I have always been an old soul. Young people are more care free and rush into areas where the Bible says only a fool would go. Areas they do not understand. Old people usually give better advice than younger people, because life has taught them more things

It could simply be slang meaning that you're wise beyond your years. Meant in a more literal sense it would have to do with reincarnation, that your soul has lived many lives in other bodies. One has to wonder, then, where "new souls" come from.

I have a nephew who has an "old" soul - to me it's someone who is fair, kind, easygoing, has perspective beyond their years. It is a compliment, indeed.
