The commute, even in the reverse direction, will get old before long. The closer you are to NYC, the more you will spend on parking and rent. Why do you want to live near the city? Unless you are going to go there often, I'd suggest living in Long Island and taking the train in when you wanna hit the city.

Are you planning on driving to syosset or taking the LIRR from woodside, forest hills, kew gardens ,Jamaica or Brooklyn ? let us know
well that takes most of Brooklyn out of the picture except for maybe Bay Ridge- You will need to be close to the Belt Parkway and bay ridge would foot the bill .
Astoria would work also especially the area where ditmars blvd goes past LGA and then turns and meets the "el " at 31st.
If you want a more suburban environment , Flushing in the area of Northern blvd works and Whitestone would work also - just make surte that you can get onto highways w/out traversing too many local streets

If they both come out about the same financially, I'd take the one that is closer to the job. Commuting for 1 1/2 hours each day isn't going to be fun.
