Confidence is one trait that is important. When you walk onto a million dollar construction project as the engineer and the dirt is flying and megamachines are going full bore and you have to stop all work, and that stoppage is going to cost the contractor thousands of dollars per hour, you have to project not only knowledge of the issues but also have confidence in yourself.
Another important trait is ethics. You will inevetibly run into situations where if you fudge a number or overlook a problem, money is saved, and no one gets injured. Yet, if you are ethical, and more importantly professional, you cannot allow it and have to use the correct number and/or solve the problem, i.e. stop the work.
Civil engineering can be a very stressful profession.

They would be the same personality traits needed for most professions. Be open, friendly, easy to work with, just all around personable.
