I am planning on buying a pistol for my wife to carry for self-protection. The most important issues will be her ability to hold and accurately fire the thing. but some suggestions for a 100lbs, 4'10" woman would get me started. What do you suggest?

The best choice for size and ease of use is a stainless steel revolver in .38 Special.

I would suggest a Smith and Wesson small frame or a comparable Colt or Ruger. These are the top line makers. Taurus is also good, not as great quality as the top three, but good. Avoid anything else.

Avoid getting a self-loading semi-auto pistol. Too many mechanical things to be thinking about for a pure self-defense handgun.

Take her to a gun shop and try a few on for size. I also highly recommend spending a few bucks on professional training or find an NRA instructor at a local range who can provide the safety and confidence training she will need. Don't do this yourself! Trust me, someone else has 100x the impact of the husband.

Oh, and the Browning Hi Power is not a small pistol at all. It's a military pistol designed for a large man's hand, nearly the exact size of the Colt 1911. While a woman may shoot well with an HP, it's not an ideal first gun. I own several Hi Powers and love them.

I would go with a large sized .380 semi auto, like the browning bda380/beretta 84 cheeta. These guns are large for the calibre they take, which will reduce the felt recoil. Before you buy one make sure she can manipulate the slide. If she has dificulty with the slide take a look at the beretta "tip-up" barrel models. These one dont have a slide to pull, and are smaller .

I am not sure what you want to know although I probably could tell you because I am 4'11'' and around 80lbs. Like the type of gun? If you have to get a gun, I would go with a pretty small one. I would rather just have some pepper spray really.
