I Pick Frazier. Holmes Chin was not as good as Ali's.

Interesting match. Could Frazier get past Holmes' snapping telephone pole like left jab? That's the question that has to be answered. Smokin' Joe did beat Ali. Ali was not in fighting trim coming into that fight. He had an easy time with Quarry, the fight being stopped on cuts in round 3. Ali certainly didn't look sharp against Bonavena (the two fights he had before the first fight with Smokin' Joe). So that being said would Holmes lay against the ropes as frequently as Ali did in the first Frazier fight? I say no. I believe Holmes would stuff his left jab in Joe's face, but Holmes would pay a dear price with shots to the body. Having answered that question, it comes down to a question of heart and stamina. Which fighters had more. Both were great champions. Great champions don't lack either trait(to me the answer is a push). I see this fight being fought at the center of the ring meaning it's in Holmes' territory. Holmes would control the pace of the fight with his jab and right cross. Frazier would catch frequent clean shots to the head trying to get inside. Holmes as I mentioned earlier would suffer significant damage to the body. I believe in a war of attrition and with the rounds running out on Smokin' Joe, Holmes guts and I mean guts out a close split decision win. Boxing fans would be screaming for a rematch. Both fighters would need significant time to get ready physically for the rematch. Thanks for an intriguing question and one that I had to work through to give you my answer.

Brent is right i think Holmes jab would definitely give smokin joe major problems in this fight, but i think like you that Frazier would still take this, and probably by KO late on. I think Holmes would probably be able to keep Joe off him for the majority of the fight with his jab, but i just think that Fraziers left hook would come into play later in the fight, remember that a prime Joe Frazier put a prime Ali on his backside with a Left hook in 71 and i would say Ali had just as good a jab as Holmes.
The other thing that comes to mind about this match up is the trouble Tyson gave Holmes (i know it was late in his career) i always compare Frazier and Tyson as simular build and also have some simular characteristics in the way they fought (they were both left hook happy) and i just think that Frazier would hunt him and hunt him and eventually put him away.

I go with Larry Holmes overall on this contest. The area I like about Holmes is his adaptability. He could fight boxers and punchers. The only thing he lacked in his career was a great opponent who could bring out the very best in him. Now the Frazier of March 8 1971 I believe could beat Holmes. The only two men he ever lost to were Ali and Foreman. These were 2 of the greatest. I think the key would be the Holmes left jab could Frazier penetrate it or not? Also Holmes has superior size that would certainly trouble Joe. This would have to be the very best Holmes of 1980-82 to win.

This would have been quite a fight sir and a good question. I believe that Holmes would jab and jab Frazier who would be whitling some left hooks with some grazing the chin of Holmes. Frazier would work Holmes body and it would effectively slow him down about the middle part of the fight. I believe Frazier would floor Holmes in about round 11 but he would survive and come back strong using that jab of his. I pick Joe by split decision in this one.

I LOVE to be Different!

Frazier by KO10.

I agree with Brent as well. However Homes' "memorable jab" is NOT NEAR the level of Ali's LEGENDARY jab. Holmes stuck a jab in your face at 20 miles an hour. Ali painted your face with the games BEST movement. Frazier would bowl right into Holmes' jabs and do serious body damage.

Trevor Burbick, Gerry Cooney, and Renaldo Snipes hurt Holmes with their punches. Frazier was a Dinosaur compared to these three when you talk "inside fighting."

I believe Holmes extensive reach advantage would be a huge dis-advantage to him, and would give Frazier full access to Holmes body.

I believe a stunned and battered Holmes falls in 10.

I believe there would be some scary moments for Holmes but I think Larry would simply outbox Frazier just like Ali.

Smokin' Joe Frazier by a landslide. If he can connect then Holmes would be out. Frazier is more or less the most powerful fighter there ever was.

SMOIKIN JOE FRAZIER WOULD SURELY WIN! ! FRAZIER WOULD BE BATTERED, BUT HOLMES WOULD FALL IN THE MIDDLE OF THE 14th ROUND BY KO! THE HOLMES JAB COULD NOT BE ENOUGH TO STOP FRAZIER!
SMOIKIN JOE FRAZIER'S STYLE OF FIGHTING ( A LOW BOXING STANCE COMING WITH RELENTLESS BARRAGES OF HOOKS AND BODY SHOTS THAT WOULD EVENTUALL TAKE THE STEAM OUT OF LARRY! THEN HOLMES BECOMES DESPERATE ,HE CHANGES HIS STLE, BY SLUGGING IT OUT !INSTEAD OF STAYING WITH HIS FIGHT PLAN! HOLMES MAKES A MISTAKE AND DOWN GOs LARRY! I GREW UP IN THE 60S AND 70S WHEN MANY GREAT FIGHTERS THAT WERE CONTENDERS WOULD BE CHAMPS IN OTHER ERA!! BUT! HE CAME ALONG AT THE END OF THE CASSIUS CLAY, SONNY LISTON, ALI, FLOYD PATTERSON, FRAZIER, FOREMAN, BONNAVENA, JIMMY ELLIS, NORTON, CHAVALO, QUARRY, SHAVERS, AND LEON SPINKZ! ERA! , HOLMES WAS THE MOST UNDER!-RATED HVY WEIGHT OF ALL TIME ! NAME ONE GREAT FIGHTER HOLMES EVER FOUGHT! ALI, FRAZIER AND FOREMAN FOUGHT THEM ALL! AND ANY WAY HOLMES WAS JUST A ALI SPARRING PARTNER!
