I think all our guys have picked 40 S&W's (tiny town), big enough to do (and who trusts a 9mm?) and comfortable to carry. And if they need a big banger, it's only a house or two away. That situation a few years ago with the LAPD having only pistols and the robbers having body armor wouldn't do here. Bubba with his deer rifle would have them down in a skinny minute. We're not talking silly high-velocity 22's like the AR15 variants that make no sense for police work. Even the old anemic 30-30 in an 1894 lever action is more powerful than the 7.62x39 in an AK47. They're welcome to borrow my 9.3x62 if they need it. (That would suppose a LARGE bad guy!)

That is not true for the person that said police pfficers can not operate automatic weapons. Anyone can operate an auomatic weapon if you have the mney and connections to get approved for the license. Besides SWAT members are Police officers and they have automatic weapons. I think in Tampa people mainly have AR-15's and also maybe even MP5's

5.56 mm (.223 Cal) [AR-15's] are routinely carried by regular patrol officers (at least in the trunk anyway). and 7.62mmx51 (.308 Cal) is used by the force's snipers. .223 is about as powerful as you want to get for law enforcement purposes in an urban setting (except for snipers). Once you start using anything more powerful over-penetration and the possibility of stray rounds going through walls becomes a serious safety concern.

My local police department had a German MG-15 machine gun that an old lady gave them. She thought it was a hunting rifle that her deceased husband owned.

7.92mm and it was in good operating condition. They donated it to a museum.

One Pk83 FlakKannon and one Bofers 30mm anti-aircraft cannon that requires 7 men to work but keeps pesky airplanes away from the police station.
