I am not saying I agree with the age, but in the State of Michigan you can take driver's education starting at age 14 years 9 months. The state drastically increased the number of hours that need to be driven before earning the license so the age to start training was dropped.

Some people learn at 12.
As it stands popular cars are usually built around someone of average height. Tweens and Teenagers are not yet Average height. You need someoen to be able to pay attention and understand some consquenses of actions.
It's really more of an Indivual basis. Some people are mature enough at one age and some another. But if you were to go by results and statistics they would suggest 21,.. even though then at 21 new drivers would still have problems.
Added:
As for Education, it would be smart to start some form of Education (not Experience) in Middle School or Junior High as School Systems vary so widely that some people are already of legal driving age by the time they start High School. But as I have seen the best drivers are the result of schools that start with lower grades in Elementary school.
They learn to drive with/in toys in Elementary school, pretending they are in a car and they do get into accidents (so experience is gained). The education tends to start off with identification of signs/signals and their meaning and how to be a pedastrian safely,.. then rollar blades & skates perhaps but then the next level is operateing a bicycle while obeying laws. The experience while they are learning in school is not in the field but they can run into each other and that is enough. They wear proper protection. Then when they go to parks/playgrounds with their parents they follow these rules/laws or even on isolated bike trails. Eventually they find themselves in situations where they are near cars, not monitored by an adult well, or no adult is present.

I had my first car at 12. I used to drive it in the fields. I had my permit and license at 16 because my mom didn't drive and I had a job I needed to get to. With that said, I'm not sure kids today are mature enough to get behind the wheel of a car. Even some 18 yr olds do some pretty stupid things while driving. Things are just different now.

The 14 year olds would think it was cool.
They should be able to start at 18.
People under 18 are not allowed to run machinery, join the military or do other things that may cause harm to themselves or others. Why should driving a car be different?

I say 16 is the right age. I have a 16 year old daughter who is very responsible and a good driver. But she drove for me in the pasture a couple of years and raced dirt track for 3 years. It depends on the person, but I want my kids driving while i still have some control. At 18 they won't be around as much for instruction. and there are just as many irresponsible adult drivers speeding, passing in no passing zones and tailgating. So don't be too hard on the kids.

I don't think that it's Good for anyone to get their License while they're 16, they should keep their permit until they become 18 and not even when your 17 they should let you wait till your 18yrs.old cause teens drink and drive, not responsible, don't do cufe,l and they doen't even act Mature. I'm 18 I'll be 19 by January 15,2007 so hopefully i get work to afforfd my Insurance. I've never drove without an adult and i'm 18 I have my own car and i never drove anywhere unless my mom was with me cause I'm not up for messing my self up I have a Good scholl History, And a Good life record which means no criminal record. And besides these teens today have alot of wrecks cause they have their trouble friends in the car and they'r not aloowed over 2 people in the car. I say no no no no no no no no

No, it wouldn't be cool to have 14 year olds driving on the roads. Alot of 14 year olds are too immature to walk down the sidewalk safely, none the less driving 60 mph on the highway.

I really think 17 is a reasonable age. 14 is just way too young. It's not whether you're mature or immature, but reaction times and experiences with life or death situations (which can be found in a car) will most likely be better on older teens than younger.
Plus, we won't let a 14-year-old die if we could help it. That's just too young.

I did.
I think you should be able to drive when you can pay cash for your own car, insurance, and fuel. AND right after you have smashed your finger with a hammer and are able to realize that cars are just like a 3000 pound hammer.
There is no exact age for that, obviously.
