Why weren't you wearing a welding mask.
What you did is as bad as staring into the sun!
What you are suffering from is a retina burn. It may be treatable, but you need to see an eye doctor to be sure.

Every welder has had it. It is very painful and annoying. If you have it now, the best home remedy is raw potato slices over the eyes. A bad enough case of it will mean a trip to the doc. Welding without a shield is bad news. If you were wearing a proper shield, and u still get flash then u need a darker lens. People with blue or green eyes generally require darker lenses. If you are welding in a room with high reflectivity, or on stainless or alloy, you will need darker lenses. If you were wearing "cutting" goggles for use with an oxyacetylene torch, you were not properly equipped to weld. Torches are not as bright and don't give off UV radiation so the lenses are not as dark. Maybe visit your local welding supply and check out some of the safety equipment there. The can make sure you have the proper shield. UV radiation from ARC just like sunlight causes sunburn, skin damage and skin cancer. Welders stay covered not only to protect from fire burns, but "sun"burn as well.

Wow, I am really surprised that I didn't read the one about putting potato slices on your eyes in every answer posted...something about the starch in the potato helping with the pain...
But what does work is this...go to the Dr. get the prescription for the eye drops with the pain killer and have him give you like a 3 day script for percocet pain killers...go home dose up and STAY OUT OF THE LIGHT until the next morning...I like to use an eye mask for added darkness
The pain and damage is temporary...I have researched this over and over...temporary in that once isn't bad but don't continue this process...try a darker lens...welding shields if those around you are welding while your hood is up, etc...
I have welded for 21 years and I am an inspector for 8 years...hey flash happens just make sure that you work to avoid it in the future

If it is very bad, as in you can not see to read this then you need to you see a doctor. Other wise all you can do is wait it out. Try some ice packs on your eyes. Were you stick welding, wire feeding or MIG welding because this can be a big difference. Stick and wire feed should go away rather quickly depending on how long you were exposed. MIG welding is a bad deal. Hopeful you did not cause permanent damage because with a burn from MIG it will take a while to heal.

welding mask or goggles if using and the flash is dangerous for the people nearby - depending on the exposure then sunglasses can help if bad then use gas welding goggles ( not as dark as arc goggles ) but it really needs to be shielded at the source - if you feel pain you are receiving PERMANENT DAMAGE
unlike the above i assume you are not the welder because after a few minutes you would be typing in braille

Solar powered lens don't use batteries that need recharging. The solar cell reacts to the welding arc and darkens the lens automatically. The better helmets have a shorter flash time (better eye protection) and most of them have adjustments to lighten or darken the lens. I have a cheap one and usually get a headache after using it.

Adding to the above...
There is a lot of UV light put off by arcing. This can lead to the formation of cataracts.
Wear a hood. Don't look at the arc while someone else is welding.
Who is supervising you, anyway?

Use your hood/googles when you weld.
As you get better as a welder, you'll be able to tack it and flip your hood down with your eyes closed.
