The bottom line is whether or not it does what you want or need it to do. The rest is meaningless.

If you are running Windows ME, for the past two years I am sure that you are aware that Microsoft does not support anything prior to Windows XP Pro., Home, SP 2. This means that you are not getting any critical updates or support.

Microsoft Vista is out on the market. Before you run out an purchase this expensive platform, you should have a tech., unless your know yourself if your resources will handle this platform. My understanding it will drain the average resources of most computers out there.

You may want to purchase a very small item from an OEM, computer company. An then they will sell you a registered Microsoft Windows XP Pro. or XP Home.

Have them open the box an in install the platform before your eyes. You want to see SP2 installed an all of the other critical updates installed. This way you know for sure that your CD, is legal and the registration key is legal.

Make sure that you get the box back and keep in a safe place as your registration key is on the side of the box.

There are alot of techs., who will open a new package, use the CD for themselves or a family member. Reseal the package with the same plastic and resell you the CD, an it will not pass Microsoft WGA, test to confirm your key is genuine.

That all depends on if the new MS operating system will allow you to upgrade to it directly from the WinME operating system.

It probably will be OK as Win2000 was upgradable to an extent from systems thatwere running Win95 WINXP was upgradeable from systems running Win98 but in both cases one had to run a Hardware Compatability check and upgrade the hardware portions of the systems inorder to perform the upgrade.

Some of the components that came with the WinME systems did not play well with the WIN2000 PRO and the WINXP operating systems. You may want to check the Microsoft Web site to see if all the components of your ME system are on the Hardware compatibility list for the new operating system.

A few questions to ask are:

What are the minimum system requirements needed to run the new OS? IE : Processor, Ram, Bus Speed, Hard Drive Size, Audio Card, Sound Card, CD/CDW, Monitor, Modem, Mouse Keyboard. Also you will probably need updated versions of the software you want to run.

I hope this helped you

Windows ME is the laughing stock of all MS Operating Systems, it's a horrible OS. If you are not currently experiencing major problems with it then I'd recommend waiting as Windows Vista will be released soon (the actual date escapes me at the moment). Otherwise upgrade to XP Home or Pro.

Upgrade the operating system? What will you be upgrading? If you plan on going to Vista, make sure your PC will run it. I have a feeling you may have a hard time running it. If you plan on upgrading to XP, then do that at any time. No need to wait for that. XP is much better then Millennium.
