If you don't know him or anything, I'd say somewhere where there is some people. With some blind dates....you never know. Well, unless it's a good friend that hooked you up or something, but otherwise...

Make sure your in a public place! If you have just met him make sure your not alone you gotta remember you dont know this person also I would maybe have some Dinner in a nice place where both of you can talk over a nice meal also how about an amusment park can talk to each other while you wait in line or even to a festival of some sort look in the new paper they offer many attractions that are going on in your local city. I have heard it suggested that you always meet for the first time in a public place ie restaurant etc. Also, I have heard the idea of trying lunch for a first date. If it is horrible, it is not too long.

Somewhere public. Maybe the mall because some of the places you two will shop will strike up a good conversation.
