I am pretty sure I remember from English class that proper grammar places and exclamation point directly after the last letter of the last word of a sentence. So why do I always see people place a space between the two? Especially when they are entering multiple exclamation points? Example: Look at the pretty bird !!!

You're a really excellent writer. Here's a few pointers: 1. Try to avoid replacing the word "said" with more interesting adverbs. The problem with this is that it almost ALWAYS distracts from the actual dialogue. Most of yours is OK, but just keep that in mind. 2. Don't go on forever about one thing, especially when describing something. I know it's tempting -- believe me, I do it all the time -- but readers usually skip over the heavily descriptive paragraphs to find action. Keep things moving generally fast, if you can. 3. The last few sentences you've got posted are pretty strong, but as I mentioned before, try to keep things from rolling on forever. 4. Lastly, keep suspense in mind. This passage is really interesting, got me wondering what's going to happen next, whats happening, etc. But after I read it and started answering your question, the magic was gone. You want to keep the suspense in tact, after the reader has put down your book. =) Hope this is sound advice. =) You're a really good author/writer, so keep writing!
