Mainly affection but can be either. My male cat likes to clean my two female cats but will also hold them down when they don't want to be cleaned.

I have a male and female, and my male cat never used to groom other cats (had two others but died), these were male, but when i got my new one, he started to lick her head, and groom her. It can be broken down into two answers:

1) He is showing affection and accepting her into the household, and being female he will show alot more affection as he would to a male cat.
2) the female accepts it as a sign of submission, that he is the top cat in the house.

My cat that died 3 mths agoIf and he used to lick my head, so it is a pure sign of affection and acceptance.

It is just a spot of grooming, he must get on with her though as a cat wont groom any old passer by! Be glad they are grooming each other....not really relevant where he licks her except the top of her head is maybe not the easiest of places for her to keep really clean, so he helps out, she more than likely does the same to him... I had a wee black tom who was always washing my other female cat...its cool...

if they are not fixed this is a mating ritual and you need to have them spayed and nuetered... If they already are.. its basically the same thing, that the male is just going through the motions and its just ritualistic... not to worry too much if the female doesnt like she can fight back... sometimes fixed females will still have a mock heat... he may be smelling it and reacting but nothing will come of it if they are both fixed.

it can be both - I used to have 4 cats and they all used to wash each other at the same time as though it was some ritual. I would not worry about this at least she will be clean if nothing else.

Its an act of affection. He's just grooming her. Cats do that in the wild too.

Grooming is affection. Both my cats groom each other. One male, one female.

i dunno
they could have a relationship going
they could even be married ( however cats do it )
so it's normal for them to show effection towards each other
same way that parent's have effection for each other.
but for the agressive part - u never know

Many cats lick each other. I would think this is affection unless she is yelling.
