My dad had a stroke this year of January. Fortunately he can still talk but his left side is limpy and weak. Sometimes he has pain on his left side and the doctor can't explain it. Physical therapy is too expensive even after his med. benefits covered 20%. So he stopped getting treatments. What can we do to help him gain strength on his left side again? Will he always limp when he walks now? Does anyone know where we can get help to pay for his medical bills? I know he's depress inside because he feels limited. I want to help him but I have no idea anymore what to do. Thanks in advance!

he has damage to the controls for his left side. the only way to make it better is if he uses that side and retrains his brain to control it. its not an easy process and it may never be the same again but some people can improve significantly with work. just be supportive do research on strokes and get as much understanding as possible that will be your best way of helping. oh and try not to push him too hard hes under allot of stress and needs time to figure this out as well. Good luck and try not to take this all on your shoulders discuss how you are feeling with your parents and remember to take time to be a kid.

I have cousin who was in somwhat of the same situation, he lost complete control of the whole left side of his body. Nobody thought that he would be able to function normally again, that was about 7 months ago. He has been doing therapy and also going to the gym and just being more active. He is now able to function like a normal person and has movement back, still has a little trouble here and there but that was expected. I suggest that since therapy is too expensive, you should try and get him a membership to a gym where he can work out and also go into the swimming pool and get some type of therapy there... good luck to you and I wish your father a good recovery.

Contact medicaid. They have a program where after you pay so much based on your income, perhaps they can help. If he is a veteran they might help. In Illinois where I come from there is a Department of Rehabilitative Services, there might be an equivelant program where you live. Call the Dept of Human Services and ask them for help. If he is a serior call the senior services center for suggestions.
I also know that rehab for this is often a series of exercises that possibly could be done on his own. Try the library or research the internet for the types of exercises he can do for this problem
Good luck

the hospital probably has a printed regimin for stroke patients,

call see if you can get a copy.
Do the excercises at home
The sooner to the stroke the better chances of recovery.

I work with a woman who had a stroke, and she is %100 recovered.

the nerves do have a way of re-routing themselves, but you do have to work at it.
I don';t know about paying for medical bills,
but I do know, I have a lot of them for my wife, and they didn't keep me from buying a house, ( the credit people only wanted to know about bills I made like credit cards, not medical bills) and the docors take small payments every month, for the rest of forever most likely.

too, Look up stroke victims on the chats, get him talking with other people with similar problems, they can give you tricks that may help.

You can help him do his excersizes he use to do at his old treatments. Have him lift some light weights with his left arm and move his leg up and done.

You can also sign him up for some really easy yoga. I heard that helps
