No, only if you want to be an officer. Being in the military essentially puts you to the head of the line for citizenship. Some jobs require citizenship and/or clearance. Of course the clearance is easier if you are a US born citizen rather than naturalized. Also you don't have to wait until you get out to gain citizenship

No! A large segment of US military are foreign born. This is the fast track to US citizenship. It sure beats the hell out of peeking around street corners waiting for immigration to nab you and send you back from whence you came. That is, if you are illegal to begin with.

The US military complex is accustomed to immigrants in their ranks and both have adjusted well to the union.

I can remember my boot camp days back in the fifties. We had a recruit with the first name Oliver. He was from Great Britain, accent and all, we called him Ollie. To show his allegiance to the flag of the US, Ollie would commonly refrain with: "aw, screw the Queen!"

No, you do not. After you serve your first term successfully, and with honor according to the military, you can apply for citizenship and become a US citizen.

No, some soldiers(legal immigrants) have become naturalized citizens while in the service.

Nope-- and in fact you must register for selective service regardless of nationality and/or legal residency status.

There have even been some non-citizens in pretty high levels.

Nope, you just need a green card, but not citizenship. Of course, there are certain jobs you will not be able to do, but you can still serve.
