I know everyone likes to tout the number 32, which is the published number on wikipedia. I'd like to remind, however, that wikipedia is an extremely unreliable source. The EXACT number of SR-71s produced is classified information, so the surest answer to this question is the same answer that the Air Force admits to it (when asked)... that is to say, more than thirty were produced.

32 were made and they were originally designated the YA-12 which is expirmental attack aircraft. But it was too fast for any guns or missile of the day to be useful. so it was switched to a recon aircraft. The skunk works destroyed the tooling to make them so that they could never be copied by an enemy power. Which is a true shame since it is really a unique type of aircraft.

Very small number --> 32

I think that at a certain point in the 60's Lockheed was ordered to destroy the tooling etc. necessary to build them.
