I use Capstar. It is a pill safe enough for a 4 wk old puppy but it works great . You can get it in some pet stores for about 15 to 18 dollars for 6 pills. It will kill every adult flee on the dog but the only problem is it don't kill larva or eggs so you have to give them a pill every week until you are sure they are gone.
Or you could get program from your vet it is a heartworm treatment that also kills fleas and worms for a month per pill. but it is expensive but if you are going to do heartworm preventative anyway I would look into it.

There is capstar. It is a pill. However it only kills adult fleas, so you can use that but you are supposed to use advantage or frontline after that. I know this cuz I just talked to a vet the other day about the same thing. The pill is only like 5 bucks, or you can get a pack for 10 or 15. you can try that, it will get rid of the biting ones, but does nothing for the eggs. Good luck. Fleas suck.

If your dog currently has fleas you'll need at least two different meds to one kill the existing adult fleas and secondly one to break the life cycle of eggs/young fleas. Sentinel is a prescription med that kills eggs and young fleas. I haven't personally had a flea problem (knock on wood) so I don't know of a flea med for the adults...ask your vet they'll know and recommend one you can either buy at the pet store or some are prescription. And don't forget to bug bomb your house and treat all animals in your house to prevent spreading and re-infestation if you know you have fleas.

Some people say that if you add Brewer's Yeast (you can get it at the health food store/vitamin department) to the dog's food it repels fleas. I have also heard the same thing about garlic.

My best advice is that if you are worried about using a topical flea medication due to your dog's age, then consult your Vet.

I think there is a pill prescription available at the vet's, but it might not be good for older dogs. Canine Advantage treatment is a good skin-level treatment that you put on with a dropper. Ask your vet.

There are oral medications available from your veterinarian. They are available as a stand alone pill, or in combination for Heartworm/intestinal parasite protection.
