in my job I have access to customer information as in phone #, address, DOB, DL # etc. My friends are police and they will ask me for info to aid in catching these crooks. I dont get anything, not money or favors, just the satisfaction of knowing a dirtbag is off of the street. these are not common people these are murders, robbers, gang bangers, theives and other dirt bags...

what do you think of this? I could get fired for doing this, but I have a family and want to make the world( at least my town) a safer place. If I turn a blind Eye I or anyone could be the next victim.
The info I have supplied has been the break in some very major cases.

Yeah afraid you are wrong as two wrongs don't make a right. Sure you could lose your job. But if the police want this information there are clear ways they can obtain it. So they are taking shortcuts and using you. The law is the law and shortcuts have no place in it. Its made to protect everyone. Yes sometimes a guilty person does go free. But isn't that better than an innocent one going to prison? There are so many things you can do as a citizen without allowing in this case the police to break the law. I suggest you start saying no. Peoples rights are important not just guilty but innocent as well. If you were so sure about whether what you are doing is right you probably would have never asked the question you did here. I think its great you want to help but don't violate the law doing so. Merry Christmas

You fail to mention where you are from, but I'll assume the U S. There are laws against reveling personal information. Losing your job could be the least of your worries. Have you ever asked you friends why they can't get the information on their own? I be interested in hearing the answer. If the information that you gave is open to the public as in a phone book then no harm no foul. If it is not, you may have a big problem if it gets out.

Except you're violating the privacy of your customers. Sure, right now, you're helping for "good," but where does that stop? Don't your customers have expectations that you're not going to give out their private information that way? Didn't your company provide a document saying that they wouldn't? Wouldn't your company lose lots of money through lost customers if they found out what you were doing? Don't forget, all the major telecomms went through a HUGE P.R. nightmare when they were giving out trap and trace information without a warrant just because the government asked. What if your police officers have been exaggerating the "breaks," and they're using this info to bribe, or extort others?
Let's put it this way--what if it was you?
I work in a field where confidentiality is CRUCIAL, not just to my individual clients, but to my field in general, because clients need to know that they can trust that their secrets aren't going to be blabbed to their competitor (or even the police). If that goes away, then the clients don't tell me everything I need to know to help them, and then I (along with everyone in my field) can't do their job. Sure, turning in scumbags may be a small positive, but it will be offset by much larger negatives, for your employer, for their economics, and for society.

Morally speaking mind you i can see why you are doing it but with honesty no it's wrong. Now if these so-called friends of yours are police officers then they are actually taking your friendship for granted.Police officers have their own data basis set up in their computor system and usually are updated continuely. Now I grant you that some info may not be in their data base if the person has moved recently but all in all they have what you have in your own data base,,believe me.I'm not sure what kind of game they are playing but you are right that if you are caught you can get fired and also fined or imprisoned for breaking the "confidentiality act that was passed regarding personal info getting out without permission. So if i were you I'd stop giving out free information that isn't yours to give.Just to protect your ownself.you could be sued!

If these "police" friends of yours do not have a court order saying it is OK for them to receive this information, then what they and you are doing is also a crime. You are not helping to catch anyone. If it comes out in court that this information was collected illegally, which is what you are describing, it will not be allowed in court and could jeopardize the whole case. You need to call the police on these "police" friends of yours.

If you want to help your community, be a law abiding citizen. Only give out private information with a court order. The bottom line is that you aren't helping your community by breaking the law. If the police, or anybody else, has the need to know, they will have a court order.

Who is going to make the world a safe place from you? The police have plenty of tools to catch criminals. If they need to break the law by violating people's privacy, then it is they (and you) that society needs protection from.

"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized." -- Fourth Amendment to the US Constitution.

"They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." -- Ben Franklin

It might make you feel important and safe to violate the rights of these "criminals," but don't kid yourself into thinking that you are any less of a criminal. The people you are catching steal money; You are stealing America.

if your friends are from the police ? they should have access to theses informations .so why are they asking you? i looks to me that the informations you give them is for personnal use .....
yes ,you may get fired at have jail time as well ,you are not allowed by the law to do this ;
the police have access to all they need , please stop before you end up as a criminal .........and you are not making the world safer by doing this .you are participating in breaking the law yourself ,have you thought of this ?

Why are your friends asking you? Police officers have access to that information. Sounds like they're doing some shady work. Stop helping them this minute. Losing your job is not worth it. If they cause trouble, report them to the chief of police in their area.

Don't feel guilty. Let the cops do their job the right way.

There is a reason you could get fired. It is wrong. Let the police do their jobs and find these people like every other police dept. does. If it is a convicted escapee that is one thing but as far as you know they are innocent until proven guilty. You should quit doing that. It is not your place.
