I've had my 41-inch Sony TV since 1998. This past Sunday, as I turned it on the screen had a red line on the top and the images were blurry.

Being that the TV is 9 years old, is it worth trying to get the tube repaired or am I better off buying a new TV?

Do they still make 41-inch tube TV's?

I don't even know if I should get a LCD or plasma. Help please.

Thanks,
Cathy

The problem is not the tube...it's the circuitry. Get it fixed as a new Sony costs an arm and a leg, and other brands' picture tubes will last you about three years tops (your Sony picture tube is probably still good.) Sony makes the best, but you do pay for it. They'll sell converters for non-HDTVs, so don't worry about not being able to watch it in a couple years.

i would Suggest You buy a new TV, you might get it fixed but they get broken again and trust me the repair cost is not worth it.

Now if you should but Plasma or LCD.

You should buy Plasma if your concern is size because Plasma TVs are the current size champions, particularly when comparing TVs that consumers can easily purchase. LCDs are catching up in size with their developing technology, however, and may surpass Plasmas in the near future. This may be due to difficulties in producing glass large enough for larger plasmas.

In size wise plasma is good cost wise, easily accessable.

Depending on you room if you will be viewing TV from many different angles LCD TVs have the advantage here, but by a small margin. Your viewing experience is not going to be ideal at 160 or 175 degree angles. LCD TVs used to have a problem in this area, primarily because LCDs were originally used as single person computer monitors.

LCD is Much light and less frigle than plasma though.

Plus get a 4 year Warrenty though

From your description I believe that you have a rear projection TV and you are having problems with your Red convergence output IC. you can have a technician replace the output IC's (STK392-110 is the generic part #) and the repair sould be $300-$400, and you can get another 8-9 years of service. As long as you have cable service then the only thing you may have to do in the future is rend a box to keep watching it. If you are watching a roof antenna or "rabbit ears" then you will need to get a converter in 2009. Of course there is a possibility that your TV is capable of HDTV already. That depends upon the model # and it"s features.

The tube isn't at fault, since you can see something on the screen. Something in the electronics is messing up the picture.

But, by Feb of 2009, you'll have to get a new TV anyway, since everything is supposed to switch to HDTV.

I think you should use this as a great excuse to get a new HDTV now so you'll be ready for the switch early. Look for something with a 1080p display (1920 x1080) for the best picture. Both technologies have their advantages; ask a couple of different stores about them -- they should be able to help you decide which would be best for your viewing.

You should just buy a new tv. You should buy a lcd if you are going to watch movies on it or use it for video games, also lcd has just great picture. Also a lcd lasts longer than a plasma. A plasma only lasts on an average 7 years, it has a little better picture than a lcd, it is more expensive, and it isn't good to play video games or movies froma a dvd player though.

I believe this is CPJ(CRT projection) TV, this type of TV uses three small CRT for each basic color, I believe this small CRT already supply end. If the picture is blurry in my opinion the Small CRT is growing weak. Something you can do is called the repair guy to clean the reflection mirror that located behind the screen and maybe adjust the focus.
