... it was a load of anthropomorphized twaddle?

Surely it's possible to appreciate the magnificence of an animal following its instinct to survive and reproduce without imposing upon its brain-the-size of-a-walnut the complex emotions and motivations characteristic of humans? Are those who liked it so vain that they have to see it as a story about themselves or it's of no interest?

And that predator towards the end who picked off one of the chicks - anyone else watching thinking, Well that's good news for the survival of that predator and ITS chicks..?

Just curious.

I had the same reaction. I would have preferred a good, solid, honest documentary made from a genuine zoologist's perspective. It was like watching a documentary about a pride of lions that criticizes the males as "lazy" for not being "better providers, as men should be." Lions are not humans, and do not live by or judge one another by our cultural standards. Likewise, penguins do what they do because they are what they are. They are not humans and shouldn't be judged by human standards.

How do you know such animals aren't capable of such complex emotions? Just because they have a much smaller brain than we do does not mean they are incapable of emotion. We apply human traits to penguins and other creatures as a way to understand the motivation of those creatures. No one ever said it was definitive. As for the death of one of the chicks, the intent was not entirely to feel sympathy for the chick and the penguins, but to emphasize the reality that nature is cruel and kind at the same time. One animal's death means life for another.

Ya know, I hear what youre saying....

While the movie did give me a feeling of.....human-ness being attributed to the animals, one of the things that did strike me is that, when the predator picked off that chick - I was actually thinking "Well now, there is real life..." Sometimes, its not all pretty. Life is violent.

It's a kids movie. Is this the first time you realized these things about these types of movies? Just so you know, there isn't a Santa Claus. If you don't enjoy them, go see something else and wait until you have kids to see kids movies.
