I am 17 years old. I will be 18 in April. My mom just gave me her car (she bought a new one) but the problem is I can't drive it until I'm 18 because she won't put me on her insurance. I have tried every art of negotiation but she is stubborn. She suggested that I find my own insurance at 17 (with liability) but i'm not sure if that's possible. Is it? If so were can I find it? ANy alternatives?

In most states as long as you have a drivers license you can get insurance. The problem is at your age your rate for just liability is going to be very expensive. Call around to AIG and Progresive and get a quote. They are free. You may receive a drivers training discount and even a good student discount.

Does she have insurance on the vehicle she gave you? If so, and if you live with her, you are automatically covered as an insured under the policy. She is trying to avoid increased cost on her insurance by not reporting you as a driver on her policy. If you have an accident and you are covered the insurance will just add you to the policy later. You can check into insurance coverage on your own. There are companies out there who will insure you even if you're not 18, but if you own the vehicle. Just don't drive without insurance. That's asking for major trouble!
