A soldier can disobey authority in some cases when the officer is out of line. For instance is he was ordered to kill a fellow soldier or unarmed civilian. But the word of a higher officer can get a soldier busted down a rank or sent to military prison. So unless the situation is very dire a soldier will obey orders.
Of course it does not seem logical to voluntarily go into a dangerous situation but they are well trained and well equipped so that the chance of an dieing is drastically decreased. Once you're being fired at it makes more sense to shoot back than turn away and run

There's a little known part of the Geneva Convention that states a troop is obligated to NOT follow unethical or unlawful orders given by any high ranking authority. We are obligated to report that person. If we follow an unlawful order, we can be prosecuted. Remember Abu Graib?
Yes, we follow challenging orders, but we're not robots. They don't suck our brains out of our ears at basic. We think for ourselves. The best unit I belonged to was full of people with lots of experiences from the civilian world. We brought all our skills to the table and used them to get the job done.
Besides, you have to think logically and rationally to solve a problem in the middle of the desert, without all of the necessary resources, in a short amount of time while you're getting shot at. Otherwise, you freak out and get yourself and your team killed.

Moreso than you, I bet. Putting oneself in harm's way may be a cold and rational choice, balancing overall good against personal risk, but being chicken is more human, even when irrational. Soldiers are not blind robots. They understand that discipline is needed for the proper function of the unit, and the more effective the unit, the better one's chances of survival. If you compare demographics, U.S. troops are a bit above average in most categories compared to the population at large, and if altruism were measurable would be tops.

Some do, and some don't. This obedience to authority is bunk. A soldier has the option of disobeying a command if he believe it goes against the fiber of morality. For example, your platoon sgt. orders you to shoot an unarmed teenager for no apparent reason.

If an order violates the Uniform Code of Military Justice a serviceman does not have to obey it. If he or she is threatend with courtmartial for that they may obey the order under protest as they are being forced to do so by a higher authority against their will.
