In addition to the Miraculous Medal, the Virgin Mary chose to use St. Vincent de Paul's Daughters of Charity to reveal a second great sacramental: the Green Scapular. Mary appeared to Sister Justine Bisqueyburu in Paris, France, on Jan. 28, 1840. Actually the fifth of a series of apparitions, Justine was given the design of a new scapular. Sr. Justine was hesitant at first, but eventually revealed the devotion to her Spiritual Director Fr. Aladel (who was also the director of St. Catherine Laboure of the Miraculous Medal). After much delay, the scapulars were produced and distributed with many conversions and cures following.

A. A scapular is a necklace that hangs down both in front and in back, with a small, flat rectangular pendant at each end. Scapular comes from the Latin word scapula that means shoulder blade. It developed as a practical garment, protecting the habit during work, and was in time invested with spiritual significance, consecration or dedication to God.
A scapular is worn under clothing in an inconspicuous way. Traditional scapulars are made out of brown cloth like the type of cloth worn by Carmelite nuns. They can also be made out of leather, various colored cloth, vinyl, or plastic.

A scapular (from the Latin "scapula" "shoulders") is derived from the "hair shirts" worn by medieval monks to "mortify" their flesh. It has shrunk from a vest-like garment to two small rectangles, front and back, suspended by ribbons conecting them on either side. Some may argue that the material of the patches should properly be backed with burlap but the design has an almost entirely spiritual significance now.

There are several versions. The original was probably the brown one presented to Simon Stock by an apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Mt. Carmel, but there are red ones, blue ones, white ones, green ones, all adopted by various devotees of Mary and Jesus and bearing the pertinent images and slogans. It is used simply by wearing it and saying occasional formulaic prayers. Its benefits are the usual Catholic indulgences: remission of the punishment due to sins to varying degrees.

A Scapular is a protection against Satan which our Blessed Mother gave during one of Her apparitions. It is brown felt like material which represents the garment of Mary. It is worn around the neck. It has the image of Mary and of her Sacred Heart. I have also heard that there is a green scapular but not sure what this is. Usually you are consecrated yourself to her Sacred Heart.
